first, have a product/solution/information that the public needs/wants. second, get it to the public in a very personalized way.

in a nutshell – you need a niche. something small enough the big boys wont get dirty doing it, but big enough for you to survive on.

i think the best is to have the best service you can provide your clients. by adding personal touch to any of your projects may help even if your price is higher. after sales service should be excellent. your products or services should be within level of yoour competitor.
