Opening Home Business, What Do I Need To Know?

February 14th, 2010 at 05:59am Under Home Business

My husband and I have been planning to open a home based business for just over a year. Our plans are to open it by the end of 2008. My main concerns are taxes. We can not foresee our profits, but we are expecting under $50,000 for the first year. It will just be my husband and I (no employees). What taxes will we have to pay?
We will have a separate building on our property which the business will be primarily run out of, can we use this for any deductions? I am looking for any information that will help us to get the business started and have everything run smoothly. Any help would be appreciated, the more detailed the better.

What Type Of Insurance Do I Need For Affiliate Marketing?

December 19th, 2009 at 05:46pm Under Affiliate Marketing

I plan to be an affiliate marketer for large Web sites, such as Amazon. I will specifically promote a camping stool and then direct people to sites where the people can purchase the stool.
Do I need liability insurance as the affiliate marketer? If yes, what do you recommend? Or can I just ask customers to click on a link that absolves me of responsibility?

What You Need to Know About Home Business Affiliate Marketing

December 14th, 2009 at 05:58am Under Home Business

Well you have finally done it. You have packed in the rubbish job and told your boss exactly what you think. You have taken the plunge and made the decision to begin your own home business affiliate marketing. Home business affiliate marketing can be very lucrative. It provides people with the opportunity to work for themselves with very little risk to them. Those that are sales savvy, good at marketing and are not afraid of a little hard work can often do incredibly well with a home business affiliate marketing program.

Home business affiliate marketing sounds easy but you do need to exercise some caution. You want to avoid the home business affiliate marketing pitfalls that can ruin your home business and worse, have you crawling on your hands and knees back to that boss that now knows how you truly feel.

People tend to get excited when they start a new venture. Unfortunately this excitement and eagerness can cause them to miss key things in their agreement. Whenever you sign up for a home business affiliate marketing program, you will be expected to sign an agreement. The terms and conditions of the agreement for both sides should be outlined. However, if they want to hide something this is where they will put it. It will either be in the small print, so get your magnifying glass out, or they will baffle you with legal language. Either way, you need to read and understand your agreement thoroughly to avoid disappointment and lost earnings.

If you are signing up for a commission based home business affiliate marketing program then you need to understand how the term revenue is defined. This is one of the biggest pitfalls of the contracts. They may advertise 5-10% commissions but it all fall on how they define revenue. Most home business affiliate marketing programs will calculate commission on the gross value of the sale. In other words, the amount of money the site will get at the completion of the sale. You may think that this sounds great. However, you need to read this part of the agreement very carfully. The amount of the sale almost always excludes credit card or debit card payment surcharges. They also are likely to exclude payment and delivery charges as well as any gift wrapping or other surcharges. What sounded like a nice commission is soon shrinking before your eyes. Ask these questions specifically before you sign an agreement.

Some home business affiliate marketing programs are even stricter in their definition of revenue. Your commission may be based on the profit margin of the sold product. For example, if you help sell a book for 20 dollars but the company only makes 10 dollars profit, you will receive a percentage of 10 dollars not 20. This can make a substantial difference in your earnings. Again, make sure you understand these things and ask specifically what your commission will be based upon. Read your agreement and look out for odd sounding clauses. These could come back to haunt you later.

Something else to beware of when you work on commission is returns. Many home business affiliate marketing companies only pay commission out on completed sales and then only if the customer keeps the item. If they return the items your commission could be cancelled. To really rub salt in the wounds, you could be billed for the outstanding commission if you do not have sufficient commission credit built up. Make sure you understand this before signing on. You cannot expect a company to pay you a commission on an item that is returned but make sure you understand their return policy. Find out your rights in this situation.

Home business affiliate marketing can be a great way to earn money. If you have good sales and marketing skills then it can give you the opportunity to out them to good use. You will be able to work for yourself and not someone who undervalues and does not appreciate them. One needs to consider home business affiliate marketing carefully. Make sure you understand your agreement and exactly what you will be paid for. You do not want to have to go crawling back to your boss begging for your old job back.

Tax Write-offs you Need – Everyone Needs to Start a Home Business Now!

October 31st, 2009 at 05:59am Under Home Business

It’s tax time and everyone is feeling the pain. There is a widely unknown source of write-offs for any every day person. Having a home business allows anyone to take the write-offs that the Corporate Giants get. Yes, you can get great business deductions with a home business! The best thing about a home business is that you probably will not have nearly as much overhead as a traditional brick and mortar business. You do not have to pay for office or business space; just pay your rent along with your other bills. And you can get all of the tax write-offs those corporate giants get with your home business. Plus, you are working as an independent, which means you get to manage your own hours, work where you want, take time off when you need it, do the work you love to do, and more.

Tax Advantages for the Home Business Office

Home businesses have many tax advantages and benefits. Here is an example of some various home business deductions you can take advantage of:

Home Office Deductions -

If you use a room in your home or apartment for your business office, you can take the home office deduction. You simply need to use one space in your home for work for your business solely, and nothing else. This will have you qualified to take the deduction. To make sure that you will qualify for the home office deduction utilize one room in your home as your work office, and use it for nothing else.

Home Office Renovation Deductions -

If you make any upgrades to your home office you can deduct those expenses in your taxes. For example, if you paint your home office, fix something, have an addition created, or any other renovations you can write-off those expenses in your taxes.

Property Cost Deductions -

You can also write-off a portion of your rent or mortgage payments for the year due to your use of your home office. You will need to figure out how much square footage your home office is in relation to your entire home. Then you can calculate how much you can deduct depending on how much you pay in rent or in your mortgage.

Tax Deductions for a Home Business -

There are so many deductions to take advantage of. You should make yourself fully aware of all of the tax write-offs you can take advantage of. Here is an outline of those many possible home business tax write-offs.

Home Office Security -

If you keep your home office under security, such as by using a security alarm system, using camera monitoring, or other similar ways to keep your home office safe, you can probably write-off those expenses in your taxes.

Utility Expenses -

The cost of your electric payments can be deducted for as much electricity you use in your home office. You will have to calculate how much you spend on this in order to deduct those expenses. If you pay for a business telephone line, you can write-off that expense.

Transportation Expenses -

You can deduct your expenses for traveling to destinations to conduct business, such as going to the bank, visiting a client, dropping off paperwork – anything you do when you run errands for your business – you can deduct those expenses. If you move into a new home during the year you can deduct the expenses of moving the business part of your home.

Miscellaneous Home Business Deductions -

When you entertain clients or meet them for dinner, you can deduct the travel costs, as well as the cost of the meal or entertainment. Usually you can deduct up to 50% of these expenses.

When you buy something such as software, office supplies, and etc. you can deduct those expenses because they are a direct expense of your home business. Do you want a new computer? You can deduct a new computer, printer, scanner, or any other office equipment you use. Do you contact clients via internet or have a business web site? Deduct your Internet Provider, hosting costs, and your Domain name costs.

Have you taken any classes, seminars, or other training that is directly related to your home business? You can deduct those expenses.

How to Manage Home Business Taxes -

The one main key to getting all of the home business tax write-offs is managing your home business taxes well. You will need them well maintained and well organized. You need to keep records of all of your expenses in order to be able to take advantage of those home business deductions.

Receipts: Keep receipts from every expense you have throughout the year. You will need these so you can show that you did pay for these business costs.

Travel Logs: In order to take advantage of the travel deductions you will need to keep a log (best kept in your vehicle) of where you travel, why you are traveling there, the time and date, the starting mileage, and finishing mileage.

Maintaining Your Home Business Taxes Throughout the Year -

As mentioned above, it is advised that you keep your receipts and logs well maintained throughout the year by keeping them well organized. You can do this by starting some files for each month or quarter and track your expenses for each amount of time. Keep them all calculated for the period of time you choose so that when tax time comes around you won’t have to do as many calculations all at once.

Having your own home business has numerous benefits from all ends, and the best one may just be the tax write-offs you can take advantage of!

How Can You Go About Getting A Personal Loan From A Bank? What Collateral Do You Usually Need?

October 24th, 2009 at 06:44am Under Loans

I will probably need to replace my car soon, but I don’t know that I want a traditional car loan because it would require having more insurance, and thus be rather expensive for me. (It’d be about double for me, as I don’t have a spotless driving record). I was wondering if instead I could get a personal loan from the bank, say in the neighborhood of $3-5K and use that for a car thus saving me a bunch of money by not needing collision coverage if I could pay for the car in cash.
Now the questions … is this possible, or is there usually some stipulation that you can’t use a personal loan for a car? What sort of collateral do you usually need for a personal loan? If you have good credit, can you get one w/out collateral? Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

What Does A Small Business Need To Do To Ship Paper Products To International Destinations? Are There Fees?

October 12th, 2009 at 01:02am Under Small Business

I am starting a small business and want to know what steps I need to do to ship to international destinations like Japan, Korea, or Mexico. My product is simple, similar to business cards, but I am trying to learn what steps I need to take to legally offer my goods in those countries. Do I simply fill out a customs form at the Post Office and I’m all set? Or are there “export agreements” or more complicated decisions I have to make? Legally, if I send my product to a client in Japan, for example, am I subject then to Japanese laws and possibly liable _in_ Japan for breaches of some license that I may be totally unaware of? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Again, this is not a product like tobacco or alcohol, but simple pre-printed cards (very similar to business cards) that have a clients’ info on them. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
